10 Of My Favourite 90s Fashion Trends

Imagine this: butterfly clips, scrunchies, dungarees, Spice Girls blasting in the background. What era could we possibly be in? Why, the 90s of course! Obviously, this post is going to be about my favourite 90s fashion trends.

It’s hard to believe that the 90s were 17 years ago. I was a 90s child, and I loved it.

My favourite 90s fashion trends:

  1. Jelly Shoes: Man alive. These were only the best shoes ever. They did come back ‘in fashion’ for a tiny, tiny while a few years ago (and I bought some to relive my childhood). I absolutely loved Jelly Shoes in the 90s – I had a pink sparkly pair, a purple pair and peach pair.
  2.  Platform Sneakers: I loved these so, so much. I would wear them with my stripy knee high socks. Thanks to the Spice Girls for starting this trend!

    Thanks Spice Girls for these!

  3. Rainbow Stripy Knee High Socks: Another favourite of mine. These were definitely the best accessory. Whilst I do miss them, I know I’d definitely not wear them today.

Let’s have a little video break:

4. Butterfly Clips: I still have these in my hairclip box. They were so cute. I had glittery ones, velvety ones, silver ones.

5. Chokers: Yes, I know chokers have made somewhat of a comeback over the last few years, but seriously? 90s chokers were AWESOME. I had a few of them. I had one with beads on it, and a plain one for everyday wear.

6. Dungarees/overalls: I loved dungarees. My wardrobe boasted at least 2 or 3 pairs of them. My ultimate favourite would have been a pair of long dungarees, with Winnie the Pooh on them. I would wear them with my floral t-shirt and platform sneakers. Oh, that’s so fashion!

7. Cargo Pants: I look back at these now and cringe. I thought I was so cool. I would also pair these with my platform sneakers. The pockets were handy though.

Let’s have a break:

Here we go, the last few 90s fashion trends that I loved:

8. Mini Backpacks: I just sold my mini backpack from the 90s on trademe (a New Zealand auction site). It was bright yellow with multi-coloured flowers on it. I was obviously the coolest kid on the block.

9. Crop Tops: I owned a few of these. A few of them were hand-me-downs from my sister, so I was stoked when I got them!

10. Pedal Pushers: My mum made a few pairs of these for me. She was (and still is) the best mum ever. I wore them for the rest of the 90s, and retired them at the start of 2001.

So there you have it, 10 of my favourite 90s fashion trends. This was a good trip down memory lane.

There are a ton of other 90s fashion trends that I could add in here, but this blog post would probably never end!

Did you have any trends that you loved as a child, but wouldn’t be seen in today?

I have a pair of sparkly heeled jellies when I was younger and they were my favourite shoes, I was so proud of them 😂, I would totally still wear them if they fit me! Also I must say that I love a good choker too, 90’s fashion is pretty cool.

I admit, I had a pair of hand-me-down heeled jellies from my sister. I was so happy when I got them. I wore them to my year 6 formal (will actually find the photo and put it on here later today). Me too, I would wear them if I still had them. I miss most of 90s fashion! Thanks for your comment 🙂

I was a 90s kid and loved it too! I miss wearing those big scrunchies and today’s chokers have nothing on the 90s chockers.

Oh, those scrunchies were awesome! I remember using them for side ponytails, and one my sister and I called the waterfall (which was just a super high ponytail).
I agree; 90s chokers were the best!

I love all the above! I remember loving my mum’s tiny leather backpack and now I see girls wearing them all the time. It’s come around so fast.

I keep thinking that I should have kept all those 90s accessories I had! I’d be so in fashion now 😀

I love 90’s. I was born in ’94 and I remember having a Spice Girls shoe when I was in my last year in Kindergarten and how cool it was. I loved it and I was so happy because they were one of my favourites. Not to mention chokers, the ones that would come in sets (necklace, bracelet, rings, anklet)
I loved this post so much and your blog is amazing x

Oh man, so jealous that you had that! Yeah, I had those choker sets – I actually still had one from the 90s (I’m not a hoarder, it was just really precious), but I cleaned my room out not too long ago. Fully regretting getting rid of it now!
I’m going to the Spice World movie soon! I think it’s in November. #GirlPower

Thank you 🙂 That means a lot to me!

I know right. I saw some teenagers with chokers on the other day. It made me feel really old. I might have to break out my butterfly clips and really make a statement (bring back butterfly clips!).

Thank you 🙂 I found some dungarees at a second-hand shop the other day. The temptation to buy them was very, very high!

Not only can I relate to this post totally! I was born in 1988 but my sister was a 90’s child so I had nearly all of what you’ve written about at some point.
I used to have the butterfly clips and chokers and I even used to wear my knee high socks under my riding boots and my peddle pushers when I rode my bike! I feel like such a cliche right now but those were the days!
Some things are now making a fashion come back, and I actually still own a choker and a couple of those clips! Ha ha!

      Haha, I love the 90s!
I refound my choker when I was cleaning my room, but I’ve lost it again 🙁

I think of those photos is Sabrina, not Buffy! Massive 90s TV show watcher over here :p
Man reading this post brought back so many memories from my childhood- I used to love wearing colourful butterfly clips, chockers and oh! Those snap on bracelets!

Yes, you are right! Thank you for letting me know. Just looked and I wrote the wrong name! So unhappy that I did that.
The 90s were my favourite era to live in. My hair finally got long enough to wear clips and I am so tempted to get my old butterfly clips out and wear them!
