Why I love fashion so much
I love sustainable fashion. Some of you may have seen me write about it on here before or may have seen it on my Instagram. However, despite how important I think sustainable and ethical fashion is, I do really love fashion.
So, why do I love fashion so much?
I’ve loved fashion since I was little.
I have told this story before about how I used to dress in the wackiest styles in the 90s (hey, it was the 90s…). However, it wasn’t until the mid-2000s that I started to really love brands like Louis Vuitton, Versace and Gucci. I would poor over my mum’s Vogue book from the 70s and dream of owning clothes like that one day.
Fashion and style have always been something I have enjoyed.
I would spend ages drawing and designing clothes in my sketchbooks (none of them ever good, and most of them always looking like 50s prom dresses). I’m kind of tempted to put some of my drawings on here, but also nervous to do that at the same time. I’m working on a ‘vine collection’ at the moment – a collection of boots with leaves and vines embroidered on them.
My dream back then was to be a fashion journalist or an archaeologist (how diverse could I get?).
Writing was something I always wanted to do. I wanted to go to Fashion Weeks or interview fashion designers and Anna Wintour (she’s the best, honestly). However, life has a funny way of not working out the way you want it to!
Although I think that sustainable and ethical fashion is really important e.g. knowing where the items are being made, how the material is being sourced and the effect the brands are having on the environment, I really love big brands. Designing is an art form. It takes ages getting the right look, the right pattern and design that you want the clothes to have. Some Fashion Weeks you see clothes that look like they are pieces of artwork, with the draping, layering, cutouts. The colours and style are all spectacular.
My favourite brands these days are Kate Spade, Michael Kors and Oscar de la Renta.
I bought a bright red bag in Edinburgh about three years ago, and it is my go-to bag. I love Michael Kors bags because they are structured and classic.
My love for fashion and style goes deeper than just liking clothes and shopping.
I love finding out the history and story behind clothes, and I enjoy seeing designers talk about their concepts. For me, I always feel that with collections they need to be bringing a story to the customers, or bring something to the table for people to talk about. When I shop, I always inspect clothes really carefully – firstly through touch. For some reason, I like to find clothes I like the feel of e.g. the softness of a material. After feeling the material, I inspect the item through sight. If it’s a skirt, I look for the obvious things like pockets, pleats and darts. I check how well put together an item is – e.g. I check the seams to see if it is made well, or whether it will fall apart quickly.
Do you have any designers that you like?
