You can’t be a feminist if you wear revealing clothes
I love hearing other people’s opinions on feminism, even if they are completely wrong. One that really amazes me is when people say that you can’t be a feminist if you wear revealing clothes.
Now, the reason why I have an issue with that is that feminism has nothing to do with what you wear.
It doesn’t matter whether you are wearing a short skirt or a tight top. It’s not like women get ready for their day to day life where their sole objective is attracting the wrong sort of attention.
I wear short skirts because I like my legs, I happen to think my legs look amazing in short skirts. I wear them for me. Despite that, I do not like the negative attention I get – once I was on the tube in London and one guy stared at my legs for the entirety of my tube journey. If I meet a guy I like, I don’t stare at his manly bits. Give me the same respect I give you.
We need to stop shaming each other for dressing in revealing clothes (this is something both men AND women need to work on). We should be proud of our sexuality and we have the right to explore our sexuality too.
Like I said above, feminism is about so much more than just what you wear, or whether or not you’re wearing a bra. Feminism is about liberation and choice!
When Emma Watson did a fashion shoot without wearing a bra, she was told she couldn’t be a feminist.
I love this interview because she explains really well what feminism is.
I went to my twitter fam and asked them their thoughts on whether you can still be a feminist if you wear revealing clothes:
Women can wear whatever the hell they want. Let’s continue to empower women by letting them be themselves and comfortable in their own bodies!
What are some misconceptions you have heard about feminism?
